The artist Albert Weis has been dealing with phenomena of German history and their relevance for the present.
During World War I gold jewellery was replaced by iron jewellery to finance the costs of war. In 1916 a huge campaign was launched to exchange golden watch chains for iron ones.
In his work “1916” Albert Weis assembles 200 of these iron watch chains to long threads hanging down from the ceiling. With this installation of disturbing beauty individual memory and collective experience are transformed into a sculptural shape.
