“Pure” Colour you could name one of Peter Tollens’ central topics in his work. Seen from the distance the paintings almost have a monochrome impact. Getting closer they reveal an interplay of different colours. Short horizontal and vertical brushstrokes in several layers form a relief of paint whose appearance continuously changes by varying light.
Small gaps in the paint application uncover patches of underlying colours. The first monochrome impression has completely disappeared. Directly confronted with the viewer the paintings develop their intense aesthetic impact and painterly relevance.
We are very happy that Peter Tollens was so kind to open his treasure room for us. We are able to present wonderful paintings from the late 1980s. These are confronted with recent works, whose appearance seems to be calmer and more rational. But both groups of paintings confirm Peter’s ongoing interest in and passion for “pure” colour.
